It starts at your tap.

Tap water is more than H₂O. On its way to you it picks up minerals from rock and soil, like calcium, magnesium and potassium. Most cities also add a little chlorine (or chloramine) to keep it clean in the pipes.

How much of each you get depends on where you live. Your water utility publishes a yearly water quality report that lists what’s in yours.

pH, in one minute.

pH says how acidic or alkaline water is, on a scale from 0 to 14. Seven is neutral. Lower is acidic, higher is alkaline.

Each whole step is a tenfold change: water at pH 9 has a hundred times fewer hydrogen ions than water at pH 7.

The U.S. EPA suggests tap water stay between pH 6.5 and 8.5. That guideline is about taste and keeping pipes from corroding, and the EPA doesn’t enforce it.

First, the filter.

Inside the machine, your tap water runs through a filter cartridge before anything else happens.

The Jr IV keeps track of it for you: when it’s time for a new cartridge, it says so on its screen and beeps.

Then, electricity.

Next the water flows past electrode plates: four in the Jr IV, made of titanium coated in platinum. A thin membrane divides the chamber in two.

At the negative plates, water takes on electrons. It gives off a little hydrogen gas and leaves hydroxide ions (OH⁻) behind, so that side turns alkaline. At the positive plates, water gives up electrons. It gives off a little oxygen and leaves hydrogen ions (H⁺), so that side turns acidic.

Minerals like calcium and magnesium carry a positive charge, so they drift toward the negative side.

Two streams out.

That’s why the machine has two outlets. The water you choose pours from the spout; the other stream runs out a second hose, usually into the sink.

Each setting changes how the plates are run, which decides which stream comes out of the spout and how far its pH moves from your tap water’s.

Five waters from one tap.

Turn the dial and the Jr IV makes five kinds of water. These are the pH levels Enagic gives for each:

Strong Kangen Water
pH 11. Not for drinking. Enagic lists it for food prep and cleaning.
Kangen Water®
pH 8.5 to 9.5, in three levels. For drinking and cooking, coffee and tea.
Neutral Water
pH 7. Filtered, without electrolysis.
Beauty Water
pH 4 to 6. Not for drinking. Enagic lists it for face washing, hair care and cleaning.
Strong Acidic Water
About pH 2.7. Not for drinking. Enagic lists it for cleaning.

The two strongest use a little electrolysis enhancer, which the Jr IV keeps in a built-in tank. What you actually get depends on your tap water.

The other number: ORP.

Water has a second reading besides pH: ORP, or oxidation-reduction potential, measured in millivolts with an ORP meter. It shows whether water tends to take electrons or give them up.

Tap water usually reads positive. Freshly made Kangen Water reads negative, and the reading drifts back toward positive as the water sits.

Straight talk.

Water isn’t medicine. AF Legacy doesn’t claim this water treats, cures or prevents anything, and your body keeps its own blood pH in a narrow range whatever you drink.

What the machine does is easy to see: it filters your tap water and makes waters with different pH. Whether you like it is a taste test.

For anything medical, talk to your doctor.

Quick answers.

The short version of Water 101, one question at a time.

What is Kangen Water®?

Kangen Water® is Enagic’s name for the alkaline drinking water its machines make, at about pH 8.5 to 9.5. The machine filters your tap water, then uses electrolysis to split it into an alkaline stream and an acidic stream.

How does a water ionizer like the LeveLuk Jr IV work?

Tap water first runs through a filter cartridge. It then flows past electrode plates (four in the Jr IV, titanium coated in platinum) with a membrane between them. Water at the negative plates turns alkaline and water at the positive plates turns acidic, and the two streams leave by two outlets: the spout and a second hose.

What are the five types of water the Jr IV makes?

Enagic lists Strong Kangen Water at pH 11, Kangen Water® at pH 8.5 to 9.5, Neutral Water at pH 7, Beauty Water at pH 4 to 6, and Strong Acidic Water at about pH 2.7. Actual readings depend on your tap water.

Which of the five waters can you drink?

Kangen Water® is the one for drinking and cooking, and Neutral Water is filtered water at pH 7. Enagic marks Strong Kangen Water, Beauty Water and Strong Acidic Water as not for drinking.

What does pH mean for water?

pH measures how acidic or alkaline water is, from 0 to 14, with 7 as neutral. Each whole step is a tenfold change. The U.S. EPA suggests tap water stay between pH 6.5 and 8.5, a guideline about taste and corrosion that it doesn’t enforce.

What is ORP?

ORP, or oxidation-reduction potential, is measured in millivolts with an ORP meter and shows whether water tends to take electrons or give them up. Tap water usually reads positive; freshly made Kangen Water reads negative and drifts back toward positive as it sits.

Does AF Legacy say Kangen Water® has health benefits?

No. AF Legacy shares facts about how the machine works and doesn’t claim the water treats, cures or prevents anything. For medical questions, talk to your doctor.
